Cribs – Visible Tradition
A large crib under a thatched roof has always been the centre piece of the Christmas Market. This depiction of the Christmas story is typical for this region, for the shepherds visiting the stable are wearing regional Franconian dress. The clothes worn by the wooden figures of 50 cm height were fashioned by the craftswoman Bertl Kuch before World War II.
A "Crib Route" links the Christmas Market to the Children's Christmas Market on Hans-Sachs-Platz. In six stalls in Spitalgasse and in the display windows of the Dresdner Bank, cribs produced by renowned crib makers are displayed, in co-operation with the Nuremberg Crib Association. Further cribs may be admired in the foyer of the City Hall.
In addition, the Nuremberg Crib Association in Advent time puts on a show of valuable cribs in Egidien Church, Nuremberg's only Protestant baroque church, which is only five minutes' walk away from the Christmas Market. This association also presents atmospheric cribs in the Crafts Courtyard ("Handwerkerhof", opposite the Main Station).
